Discover What Horse Racing is

by Anne Ahira

Horse racing is a sport that has existed for centuries. It began back during the Roman era through their practice of chariot racing. However, horse racing has consistently evolved through the years.

There is a great variety in the different types of horse racing. Each race is determined by where it is being held and what type of surface the horses are racing on.

All horse racing surfaces are flat, but some of the surfaces that races are held on are dirt, polytrack, or even grass.

There are three important types of horse racing: Pure-bred battle quarter horse racing, and strap up racing. In the horse racing world there are some glamorous races. Perhaps the top event is the Kentucky Derby, which is held each spring.

This race is essentially a common event that is bounded with parties luncheons, and even the ritual of ladies put on charming dresses and enormous hats while the men come dressed to the competition in suits.

However, the race is not just about the fashion. It is about the winning horse really. The Kentucky Derby paired with the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes races make up the Triple Crown. Winning all three of these with one horse is by far the biggest achievement in horse racing.
